Hammacher Schlemmer Reveals Reimagined New York City Flagship Store

Iconic 57th Street Store to Unveil

New York, NY, November 26, 2013 - Hammacher Schlemmer, the beloved New York retail institution, announces a new showcase for its unique collection of "the Best, the Only, and the Unexpected" at its iconic Manhattan store. Unveiling on November 22, 2013, the double-height space is an experiential destination that encourages visitors to engage with Hammacher Schlemmer's eclectic mix of gifts, gadgets, electronics, and problem-solving items.

"We are proud to have served generations of customers for 166 years," said Fred Berns, General Manager of Hammacher Schlemmer. "Our rechristened landmark store continues our commitment to offer innovative products in an exciting new showcase."

With products as unique as their name, Hammacher Schlemmer has not only stayed relevant, but continues to make a significant impact on popular culture. Touted as "nirvana for gadget freaks" for selling the best, the only and the unexpected - guaranteed for life-the store and its wide array of products (also available via catalog and its website, Hammacher.com) have appeared in movies, on television shows, and even inspired cartoons in The New Yorker. Hammacher Schlemmer was the first to introduce everyday necessities like the pop - up toaster, electric pencil sharpener, automatic coffee maker, and the microwave oven.

Just as famous as its products, those who have frequented the New York store run the gamut from heads of state to stars of stage and screen. Most U.S. presidents have visited Hammacher Schlemmer since the term of Herbert Hoover. Hoover seemed especially taken with bar accessories; Franklin Roosevelt favored kitchen equipment and Kennedy purchased an electric bed. During her renovation of the White House closets, Lady Bird Johnson consulted Hammacher Schlemmer and more recently, the store provided bedside Zitzmann Silver Thermal Carafes and a large steamer to keep guests looking their best when staying at Blair House, the official state guest house, located across from the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Past and present members of the British royal family often included a stop at the 57th Street store as part of their trips to the United States. The Duke of Windsor was a fanatic for flashlights and bought them in every shape and variety. Other royal patrons have included the King and Queen of Spain, Princess Grace of Monaco and former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi.

Hammacher Schlemmer's founding dates back to 1848, when William Tollner opened a small hardware business on the Bowery. William Schlemmer, Tollner's 12 year - old nephew, joined him five years later from Germany and sold tools on the sidewalk in front of the store. In 1859, Alfred Hammacher became part owner, and in 1883 William Schlemmer was made partner and the business was given its current name, Hammacher Schlemmer and Company.

In 1926, Hammacher Schlemmer moved to its current location at 147 East 57th Street. With this move, the company's merchandise evolved from hardware to housewares to better serve the needs of the upscale clientele who lived in the neighborhood.
