New York, NY, April 2, 2009 - Continuing its 161-year history of offering the Best, the Only, and the Unexpected, Hammacher Schlemmer introduces The Land Sailor, a three-wheeled craft that harnesses the wind's power to reach speeds up to 25 mph on any flat surface.

"The Land Sailor allows those with no sailing experience and seasoned sailors to glide effortlessly across land, make 180º turns, and stop quickly without requiring fuel or battery power," explained Hammacher Schlemmer's General Manager, Fred Berns.

Using many of the same principles as nautical sailing, The Land Sailor has a 35½' sq. sail, mast, and boom that swivel to catch the wind from whichever direction it is blowing. The craft is steered by a foot tiller, leaving hands free to adjust the mainsheet to increase or decrease The Land Sailor's speed or pull the handbrake.

The sail is made from Dacron--the same material used by nautical vessels--and reinforced with two fiberglass battens that keep it taut during gusts for consistent, powered gliding. The wheels are made from corrosion-resistant rubber and have durable nylon rims and stainless steel bearings that enable smooth sailing on pavement, sand, grass, or dirt.

The molded ABS/polyurethane plastic body and seat are secured to the powder-coated steel frame with sturdy clevis pins, and the 20" rear wheels are cambered for stability on any surface. The exceptional engineering does not come at the expense of convenience, as The Land Sailor compacts and transports easily.

"While similar vehicles are difficult to assemble and transport, The Land Sailor sets up in less than 10 minutes and disassembles to store in four included bags that fit easily in the trunk of a car," stated Mr. Berns. The Land Sailor comes equipped with a safety harness, it is suitable for riders 12 years of age or older, and supports up to 225 lbs.
