By 1857, construction was booming and the hardware business increasingly found itself in demand. As a result Tollner needed to expand to larger quarters in order to house the increase in inventory and stock. With the help of Alfred Hammacher who invested $5,000 in a business in which he saw potential, the newly renamed Hammacher & Tollner moved to a larger space at 209 the Bowery in New York City.
