U.S. History

In October, the supersonic jet Concorde completes its final North American flight before the fleet is permanently grounded. Flying at twice the speed of sound (1350 mph) at a cruising altitude of 56,000 feet, the Concorde's average flight time from New York City to London is around 3.5 hours-less than half the eight hours required on a standard commercial jet.

The Oval Office Chair was made by the furniture maker who custom crafted office seating for eight different presidents. (Franklin D. Roosevelt purportedly had two chairs: one for his office, another for his air raid shelter.) Constructed of a solid maple frame, this leather-upholstered swivel chair has a solid cherry brass-capped base with 2-inch rubber wheels. It sells for $3,000.
