Used in training by professional bicyclists, riders turn a paddle that provides greater resistance than biking on land, resulting in a slow, controlled motion that improves muscle strength and endurance. Because the exercise is performed in water, the pool bicycle helps relieve stress on weight-bearing joints, increases flexibility, and improves balance and posture. The pool bicycle rests in as little as two feet of water--submerging it deeper increases the intensity of workouts, as does adjusting the angle of the blade's four paddles.
