These are the Randolph sunglasses issued by the U.S. Department of Defense to military pilots and crew for the past 23 years, and are noted for their scratch-resistant, neutral-gray glass lenses that absorb 98% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays, and allow sharper detail and evenness of color. The ophthalmic crown glass in the lenses has survived being hit with a steel ball dropped from a height of four feet, meeting both FDA and ANSI standards for shatter resistance. The hand-polished frames are of nickel silver components plated in 24K gold, with solder joints so strong they're separately warranted by the manufacturer. Designed specifically to fit under a flight helmet or headset (the acronym above means "Helmet Goggle Use for Pilots"), the dashing design, with a stabilizing bridge across the top, was first developed in the late 1970s.
