This is the portable device that preserves cherished slides and film negatives at 9 megapixel resolution without being tethered to a computer or electrical outlet. Slides (35mm) and negatives (110 and 135) are placed into a tray that aligns each properly when it is inserted into the converter. The touch of a button captures the image in 3-5 seconds as a JPEG file that can be immediately previewed on the built-in 2 1/2" TFT color display and stored onto an SD memory card (8 GB card sold below stores over 10,000 pictures). You can transfer images to a PC running Windows 7, Vista, or XP, or a Mac via the included USB cable (or remove your SD card). You can also connect it directly to a TV to view the conversion process or your converted images. Its 9 MP CMOS sensor provides 3328 x 2216 resolution, automatic exposure control, and color balance, resulting in clear digital images without loss of quality. Its rechargeable battery provides up to three hours of operation from a three-hour charge using the included AC adapter (or a six-hour charge via USB). Includes photo editing software that allows optional manipulation of converted digital photos. 6 1/2" H x 4 1/4" W x 4 1/4" D. (1 lb.)

I wish I had discovered the Hammacher Schlemmer slide converter a year ago. Last winter I converted over 3000 35mm slides to jpegs using another brand. By the time I was finished, I had purchased three units, the first two of which died. I surely wish I had discovered the H.S. unit first. I have made a comparison between the two brands, by re-scanning a few dozen slides. In almost every case, the H.S. unit produces a far better picture. -slightly sharper focus, better colors, and higher resolution. And possibly better white balance is most cases. -and definitely NO DARK BLUE LINE along the bottom part of dark slides!! (an un-resolvable problem with another popular brand)>>>Anyone shopping for a slide converter of this design should be aware of a few basic facts:<<<1. It is not a fast process.2. Loading and unloading the slide trays is awkward at best, more nearly slow and frustrating.3. The end product jpeg image will have a slight "cropping" of the original image. If you have a large quantity of slides to convert, then be sure to purchase the additional trays. That way you can load up a dozen slides at a time, improving your efficiency.Don't even bother with the included free software. Just transfer the SD card from the converter to your computer, copy the files into appropriate folders, and then use whatever photo viewer/editor program you are used to using.Overall, in my opinion, this Hammacher Schlemmer slide converter is an EXCELLENT PRODUCT for the money spent. (-easily several times better than my first three "other brand" units). My advice is to read all the reviews of all the popular units out there in the world market place, paying particular attention to the dislikes of people using them, and known defects in particular. Also, you can't beat the Hammacher Schlemmer customer satisfaction warranty.Thank you for reading my review based on my personal experience with two different brand units.

I received this as a gift to help with converting several hundred slides I own. While I appreciate the simplicity of the design and the resolution is good, the color balance is so far off (at least on the unit I received) that one would have to minimally retouch every single scanned slide to get an acceptable picture. I had every scan come out heavily blue/yellow. I will have to go back to the much slower flatbed for scanning these slides.

Good slide converter
By CCC
from Marquette, MI
After reading several of the reviews on this slide/negative to picture converter and also on many other similar products, I decided to go with this one. I was happy that it was easy to use and the picture quality was really good. The only downfall is that most of my negatives were from 126 film and there is not a tray for processing them. There are only trays for 110 or 135 film negatives. I was able to use the tray for 135 negatives, but part of the picture was chopped off. This would be something for the company to consider if they are looking to improve the use of this converter.

Great for converting large batches of slides and negatives. Very impressed by the quality and ease of use. Slide trays take a little getting used to, but they work just fine. Very happy I bought this.
good product

overall ease of use and set up, it is good for basic scanning of negatives but the finished file sizes are only about 721KB, from the description it leads one to believe it higher, the dementions are correct just at 72dpi.

Very easy to use and transfer from to a computer. The only con, if I must list one, is that it is abit tricky opening the slide holder and re-filling it after each three slides. However, I would highlyrecommend it to anyone.
