This is the only device that restores a cassette tape’s audio quality before converting it to audio CD format. Only available from Hammacher Schlemmer, it is made by TEAC, the company that pioneered magnetic tape recording in the 1950s. It is the only stand-alone device that uses a patented Dolby noise reduction process to remove annoying distractions, such as tape hiss, so voices and music are heard clearly as if captured on an open-reel recorder. Its tape speed control overcomes the warped playback of cassettes that routinely suffer from “tape stretch” over a lifespan of forward and reverse, reproducing the original pitch of a recording. It can also convert content to CDs from any audio device plugged into its USB or auxiliary ports, and convert content into MP3s for direct storage onto any USB storage device. With headphone jack and remote. Plugs into AC. 18" W x 6" H x 12" D. (7 lbs.)

vey labor intensive
Most tapes do not have a long enough pause between songs and the automatic track breaks are not added. You must listen through the entire tape to be recorded and manually add stops. Unit does not have built in speaker, it must be plugged into one or headphones must be used to hear playback. Also, special 'audio' cd's are required. The machine won't copy onto a standard recordable media disc. The audio discs are expensive and hard to find. Sound quality is good, and Dolby noise reduction does help with older stretched tapes. You really need some time and patience to get you money's worth.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Works as Avertised
from Portsmouth, NH
The Teac cassette to CD converter is a pleasure to use right out of the box. There is virtually no setup required. A quick read of the manual allowed me to begin converting immediatly. The sound improvement provided by the Dolby NR system was an added benefiet. The cassettes were recorded in 1975 and once on CD sound preaty good for thirty-seven years old. I would mention you need to use music / audio CD's for system to transfer.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Regular CD-R discs cannot be used. You have to order discs that will work with this product. You cannot purchase CD_R Audio discs at a store like you used to be able to do.

Cassette to CD converter
from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
The user manual is not very clear. I am very much into electronic equip and I could figure out what was required. I even guessed, correctly, some of the functions. A novice would not be able to operate it. Also, it would be more useful if it had some other functions (I will list them for you if you are interested). Otherwise, it does the job it was designed to do and I am very satisfied with it.

Cassette to CD Converter
from Zumbrota, MN
The converter works well [very high quality] from cassette tape to USB but I am unable to record to a CD because the record button fails to display the rec indicator. The CD/R discs displays DISC error. These are the disc I am planning to use for recording from cassette tapes. Also the Memorex CD/RW disk displays DISC Error as well. The only CD that read successfully was the SONY CD/RW disc. I used this one to see if I could record. When the source is set to tape the tape counter displays on the right side instead of on the left like it shows in the instruction manual.

Just what I've been looking for!

I've had TEAC products in the past and liked them very much. A very good company. This machine is up to the standards of the past, and then some. I received this machine within a week, very impressed. Since I've been into audio for over 30 years I had no trouble setting things up. The sound is great also, to say the least, I am very happy with this machine.

So happy and grateful for this product
By Word woman
from Grand Rapids, Michigan
Had 600 plus teaching tapes to transfer to CD. Am a grandma, not a techie, but found this product relatively simple to use. CDs are good quality. At times it seems a bit " sensitive" and I had to turn it off to reset it after three or four transfers. The machine did malfunction after about 400 transfers but Hammacher stood by their lifetime warranty and no questions asked, sent me a replacement , brand new machine. Frankly I was amazed and almost incredulous at the excellent customer service. The replacement arrived within three days and I am finishing my project. Can't sing their praises sufficiently. I will shop HS as often as I can in the future.

Great Item, lots of fun
from Silverton, Or.
Has been a lot of fun hearing all my old Grateful Dead bootlegs on cd. The unit seems to be good quality and has performed well so far. Also it allows you to after putting cassettes on CD, to put them into MP3 format and then load them to an ipod etc. Only drawbacks I have seen so far is the unit requires a amp and speakers to be used properly. That is acceptable to me though.
