Unlike common reading glasses with one fixed magnification, this pair lets you adjust the focus of each lens with the simple turn of a dial. Using patented fluid-injection technology developed by a physicist at Oxford, the lenses comprise an elastic membrane held between rigid polycarbonate plates. As the dial on either side of the frame is turned, the elastic membrane bows inwards or outwards, subtly changing the magnification from -4.5 diopters to +3.5 diopters. As long as the side dials remain attached, users can adjust each lens independently and if their vision changes they can simply give the side dials another twist. The flexible nose pads ensure a comfortable fit, and the side knobs can be twisted off to lock in the magnification permanently. Not intended as a replacement for prescription glasses. Black or Brown Tortoiseshell. 1 1/2" H x 7" W. (2 1/2 oz.)

The Adjustable Focus Reading Glasses
from Houston Texas
These glasses were never adjusted or used because they were too narrow for my face. All I would see was frames on either side. They must be designed for very small people with small heads and close set eyes.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Hammacher Schlemmer Response: We apologize for your experience with this product. If you would like to return or exchange, please contact us at 1-800-321-1484 and we'd be happy to assist.

verry happy with the glasses
from Thornton, CO
I mainly use the glasses to read. (books and music) I had my eyes corrected 14 years ago so I could see close-up with one eye and distance with the other. I can actually adjust the distant eye side for reading! I was surprised! I don't wear them for a long time as I get dizzy after a while. I might just need to get used to them.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This product has made it possible for me to do the fine needlework that I enjoy. My two eyes need very different corrections and these glasses are easily adjusted to each eye separately. Candidly they give me better near vision than any prescription lenses. One of the lenses has a tiny bubble floating in it that is probably an imperfection but since it does not affect the vision capability at all, I don't want to part with the glasses to have them replaced, which I am certain Hammacher Schlemmer would do.

Requires continuous focusing with slightest change in subject distance.

It has a role in over all vision managem
from Washington DC
I don't know if it is accurate magnification. but it is adequate. It took a while to figure out how to adjust both eyes and to remove the dialing mechanism. But I figured it out. I have aging vision and require complicated correction. My left vision really cannot be fully corrected. But these glasses help.

adjustable glasses what a great idea.
amazingly quick delivery/charged no customs fees. This will bridge me over until vision is stable for reading glasses.Or keep as a spare pair in emergency or if eyesight is changing due to age or sickness.Quickly adjusted with the twist of 2 fingers for each eye.Can go from far vision to reading vision by twisting without the need of a change of glasses .Definitely cheaper than bifocals.

smaller than expected

I have not taken these out of the package yet because the lenses are much smaller than I had expected. How can I return them for a refund?

In principal, the adjustment and focus change works, however the mechanism to adjust is flimsy and the frames are of minimal durabilty.
Works but could be sturdier
from Western NY, NY
Focus adjustment dials do not turn smoothly.Field of View is narrow.Outer edges of lenses seem foggy.Heavy feel.Nose pads are uncomfortable and not adjustable.Frame bows are not spring tension.Plastic seems cheap and easily broken.I was able to read comfortably without eyestrain and the lines did not seem to run together.Separate eye adjustments are a good feature.I felt they were way overpriced.
