This is the handmade reproduction based upon the world’s first jointed teddy bear, designed by Richard Steiff in Germany in 1902, only available from Hammacher Schlemmer. The Steiff family business has been the foremost global authority on plush animals since 1880, and its iconic teddy was based on one of Richard’s animal sketches and popularized after Theodore Roosevelt famously spared a bear on a hunting trip in Mississippi. The Steiff pattern is recognizable by its hockey-stick-shaped arms and unique disc joints in the head and limbs, which enable realistic movement and allow the bear to sit upright and maintain other positions. While the knitted polyester fur is a softer, cozier material than the mohair used in the original, the signature “button in ear” with the Steiff logo certifies the teddy’s lineage and authenticity. Machine washable. Ages 4 and up. 16" H x 11" W x 6" D. (19 oz.)
