Filmed in Paris, the show purposely avoided the Holmesian clichés of stage and movies, presenting the iconic English detective as he appeared in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s earliest novels. The series stars Ronald Howard (son of Lesley Howard), whose TV Holmes is more laid-back, with a humorous twinkle in his eye, unlike the darker, more serious movie character played by Basil Rathbone. Similarly, most of the 25-minute episodes are original adventures written specifically for the series rather than adaptations. Co-starring Howard Marion Crawford as Dr. John Watson and Archie Duncan as Inspector Lestrade. Remastered for optimal viewing enjoyment, the 16 hours of black-and-white whodunits come on 10 DVDs.
