Institute Test Methods
To evaluate products for a Hammacher Schlemmer Institute "Best" designation, a variety of test methods are used. The Institute uses its own expertise, nationally accredited laboratories, experts and consultants, and its own customer testing panel to determine "Best" products. To ensure objective opinions, brand names are hidden.
- Hammacher Schlemmer Institute:
For tests that require the careful scrutiny of the Institute's research team, the Institute conducts carefully controlled side-by-side comparison evaluations. Throughout the course of the test, analysts take detailed notes about each product's performance and measure data using calibrated equipment and systematic methods. All products are objectively rated on specific attributes such as ease of use, durability, and functionality.
- Independent Laboratories:
Certain product categories require the Institute to use the services of certified, independent testing laboratories. Laboratories follow established testing standards and procedures for specific product categories, and have specialized, calibrated equipment not readily available anywhere else.
- Experts & Consultants:
For a select number of tests, the Institute seeks out experts and professionals with specialized knowledge, who can provide unique insight into a product category. Experts are used when an advanced knowledge of the product category is needed, or a high skill level is required to evaluate the products under consideration.
- Customer Testing Panel:
Since its inception in 1991, the Institute's Customer Testing Panel has tested thousands of products in hundreds of product categories. By using actual customers who test the products, the Institute can determine if the products perform the same after repeated usage. After an introduction in the category by a member of the Institute team, panelists use each product (with the brand name hidden) as if they were home. Panelists read through a product's directions, follow the steps necessary to use the product, and rate the different models according to performance.
The tests performed by the Hammacher Schlemmer Institute to determine the "Best" for a product category are by no means limited to a single testing method. Often times, a combination of testing methods is the most effective way to evaluate a product category.
