Available only from Hammacher Schlemmer, this is the coin set that commemorates one of the most infamous forms of currency in U.S. history—the racketeer nickel. Minted in 1883, the nickel was designed without the word “cents” on either side, enabling criminals and counterfeiters to take advantage of its similarities with the five-dollar half eagle coin. To combat the growing fraudulent activity, the coin was re-minted later that same year with the word “cents” added on the reverse. The nickel displays a profile of lady Liberty and 13 stars on the obverse and large “V” roman numeral and "E Pluribus Unum" inscribed on the reverse. Set includes a gold-plated racketeer coin replica, and the re-minted 1883 nickel with “cents” inscribed.
