This is the authentic Mexican mortar and pestle (molcajete and tejolote) hand carved from genuine volcanic stone. An ancient culinary tool of Aztec and Mayan cultures that is cherished by discerning modern cooks, each molcajete is skillfully crafted one-at-a-time by native stone carvers, unlike mass-produced reproductions made from concrete or granite. The molcajete’s rough basalt surface enables cooks to prepare fresh guacamole, salsas, and moles with a distinctive texture and flavor that’s impossible to achieve using a food processor. Its mass and stable three-legged base also make it ideal for grinding fresh herbs and spices. Due to the handmade nature of this product, each is unique and will vary.
