Product Story

Mastering the nuances of this authentic practice chanter is the first step for novices who wish to learn to play the Great Highland Bagpipes, a centuries-old instrument once outlawed in Scotland as a way to suppress local traditions after the battle of Culloden in 1746. Crafted from rosewood with a conical central bore hole that produces a rich sound when air is blown through the mouthpiece over the reed, the chanter is tuned one step lower than an actual bagpipe chanter and is much quieter. It separates into two pieces for storage and transport. The kit includes a reed, instructional booklet, and CD that teaches basic fingering techniques developed by Captain John MacLellan, former Director of the Army School of Piping at Edinburgh Castle. Made in Scotland. 18 1/2" L. (1 lb.)
