This is the genuine self-winding stock ticker invented in 1870 by Thomas Edison that became the iconic symbol of Wall Street. The model 32A ticker was Edison’s very first invention, launching a revolution in the financial markets by improving upon the machine created by Edward Calahan in 1867. Relying on telegraph lines, Edison’s ticker used alphanumeric characters to quickly share prices over long distances and served the leading exchanges for about 80 years. The model 32A was manufactured between 1915 and 1929, and of the 16,000 produced only about 250 survive to this day, most on display in private collections or museums. Not a reproduction, the ticker has been carefully restored by hand to its original condition, looking exactly as it did in the executive suite of an anxious 19th century industrialist. Its base is printed with “Quotations Furnished By The Western Union Telegraph Company” in gold lettering.
