This is the color photograph featuring legendary Red Sox hitter Ted Williams and Yankee slugger Babe Ruth at their first meeting, personally hand-signed by “The Splendid Splinter”. Williams, who was 25 and training to become a Navy pilot, played a WWII benefit game on July 13, 1943 at Fenway Park (the day before the Major League Baseball All Star Game). The Armed Forces “All-Stars”, who were managed by Ruth and also included Yankee icon Joe DiMaggio, went on to defeat Casey Stengal’s Boston Braves 9-8 thanks to Williams’ prodigious home run.
