Williams, who was 25 and training to become a Navy pilot, played a WWII benefit game on July 13, 1943 at Fenway Park (the day before the Major League Baseball All Star Game). The Armed Forces “All-Stars”, who were managed by Ruth and also included Yankee icon Joe DiMaggio, went on to defeat Casey Stengal’s Boston Braves 9-8 thanks to Williams’ prodigious home run.
