This is the coin and stamp set that commemorates the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, an international fair that celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ journey to the New World. The .900 silver half-dollars were struck in 1892-1893 as the first commemorative coin minted by the U.S. and sold at the expo for $1 apiece. Designed by the U.S. Mint’s chief engraver, Charles E. Barber and the English engraver, George T. Morgan, the coin’s obverse features a bust of Christopher Columbus while the reverse contains an image of the Santa Maria positioned above the globe’s east and west hemispheres.
