Product Story

This is the 16" globe that rests atop a stand inspired by a Frank Lloyd Wright obelisk vase design. Made by Replogle Globes, crafters of fine terrestrial globes for 83 years, the stand's obeliskoid shape is an homage to a Wright vase concept from 1929, once slated for production in glass, but because of the complexity required, was never manufactured. Expertly handcrafted from solid wood, a square cherry base and pedestal with four contrasting elongated maple wedges forms the stand's tapering shape, providing solid footing for the globe. The globe's map gores are hand-cut and hand-applied using a time-intensive process, resulting in an antiqe, parchment style raised relief surface that reveals typically overlooked high points on the Earth, such as the Urals, Atlas, or even Algeria's Ahaggar, and includes over 4,000 named places and points of interest. Updated to reflect modern geopolotical boundaries, such as South Sudan, the globe displays bordering countries in contrasting colors for easy identification. It rests at a 23.5º angle, replicating the earth's position in relation to the sun, and has a full-swing, die-cast metal meridian. Minor assembly. Made in the U.S. 48" H x 20 1/2" W x 16" D. (21 lbs.)
