Favored by Orville Wright and U.S. presidents, this is the oak tool chest handmade by H. Gerstner & Sons, crafter of solid-wood tool cabinets for over 100 years. Painstakingly fitted piece-by-piece using the time-tested methods developed in 1906, the chest is made of solid quartersawn American white oak and constructed using tongue and groove joinery and lock joint corners. Fit tolerances are measured with hand gauges to ensure exacting standards and generations of reliable use. Twenty-one drawers range in size from 9 3/4 to 15 1/2" deep and provide 6,935 cubic inches of storage to accommodate everything from nuts and bolts to precision tools, gauges, and power tools. Each drawer is lined with hunter green felt that wicks away moisture, protecting tools from rust and rot. The drawers are meticulously shaped, planed, and fitted by hand to ensure they open and close smoothly, and the topmost chest has Gerstner’s patented spring-loaded brass catches that prevent drawers from falling out of the unit. Two sliding-hinged panels pull out from the chest, cover the drawers, and can lock for secure storage. The drawer pulls, corner mounts, handles, and locks are nickel-plated, and the chest undergoes a three-step stain and lacquer finish that is hand rubbed into the grain to retain the wood’s natural, rich golden color.
