Product Story

This is the classic U.S. Liberty Head Double Eagle gold coin minted in 1850. Also known as the Coronet Double Eagle, the coin is composed of 90% pure gold that was mined during the California Gold Rush. This genuine twenty-dollar piece was designed by James B. Longacre, the fourth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint who also designed the Indian Head penny. The design was struck as a pattern coin in 1849 and first produced as official U.S. currency in 1850. In 1907, the coin’s design was replaced with the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle and in 1933, all U.S. gold coins were recalled and melted to combat the hoarding of gold during the Great Depression. This surviving coin is preserved in nearly uncirculated condition with its original golden luster and sculpted details featuring the head of lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars on the obverse and a Heraldic Eagle with "E Pluribus Unum" inscribed on the reverse. The coin comes with a certificate of authenticity and arrives in a wooden display case. Coin 1 1/3" diam; case 6 1/2" L x 6 1/2" W x 1 3/4" H. (20 oz.)
