Product Story

Introduced by Hammacher Schlemmer in 1971, this tide timer commemorates the 25th anniversary of the original. Much easier to understand than tide tables, it is especially beneficial for the individual needing information on tidal activity (boaters, beachcombers and fishermen). It operates on moon time which is 24 hours, 50-1/2 minutes, not sun time. The hour hand shows how many hours until the next high or low tide and the second hand indicates the timer is working. On the Atlantic coast, it never needs adjustment (although the actual time of the tides is affected by strong winds, changes in atmospheric pressure, the relative position of the sun and the elliptical pattern of the moon, it varies only slightly from the rhythmic cycle). On the Pacific coast, it may be calibrated (instructions are included) to different coastal locations to compensate for the more significant variations which occur in the ocean. The tide timer does not function well on the Gulf of Mexico. Clear acrylic face with bold numbers. Can be used freestanding or wall mounted. Runs on one AA battery (included). 6-1/4" H x 6" W x 2-3/4" D. (1.5 lbs.)
