The Sparrow Hawk Cedar Flute

This wooden flute is designed for beginning players with no prior musical experience, and is made from 100% Spanish cedar, known for its density and the color variation of its grain, resulting in a unique instrument every time one is crafted. Meticulously hand-carved by craftsmen in southern Arizona, the flute is formed from a solid piece of cedar, a softwood that generates warm, clear tones. The Plains-style flute replicates the same traditional design elements of instruments created by ancient Mesoamerican cultures, evidenced by the use of two separate internal chambers¿a wind chamber adjacent to the mouthpiece and a sound chamber, divided by a wooden fipple that gives the instrument its unique tonal qualities. It is tuned to the key of A in two octaves for play in the diatonic and chromatic scales. The finest cedar is selected, shaped, bored, hand-sanded and finished with a non-toxic hardening oil for durability and sound clarity. It has a leather strap that can be slid up and down the flute to cover the third hole, creating a five-holed flute (in pentatonic scale).
