This is the electric hybrid bicycle that automatically adjusts the power boost to match the riding conditions. The bicycle employs a pedal-activated, torque-sensing controller to detect the force exerted and changes in terrain and to apply the appropriate amount of power from a 250-watt brushless hub motor in the front wheel. With three hand-shifted gears plus three power modes that maximize power consumption on level surfaces, and increase assistance when climbing hills or when transporting heavy loads, the bicycle makes extended tours possible for those who may tire on a traditional two-wheeler. Winner of Best of Innovations in Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, the bicycle operates like a hybrid car, charging its battery on descents, when coasting downhill, or when the rear brake is applied, extending the battery's charge up to 18%. Hand-operated front V-brakes and rear roller brakes bring the bicycle to a controlled stop quickly. Unlike the massive battery packs found on typical electric bicycles, this model uses a compact, lighter-weight, removable Lithium-ion battery that stores in a lockable cage beneath the seat and charges in 3 1/2 hours with the included AC charger. The battery powers the motor for 16-46 miles depending on power setting, speed, and terrain. (The bicycle can also be ridden without the motor engaged like a standard two-wheeler.) A low-slung aluminum frame allows easy mounting and dismounting, with all cables hidden in a channel on its underside. The cushioned saddle seat adjusts from 29 1/2" H to 36 1/2" H for riders 4' 8" or taller.
