Product Story

Made in Westmeath, Ireland, this is the working compass that bears the ornate swirling motif found throughout Celtic art for over 12 centuries. Appearing in the iconic Book of Kells, the motif is etched into a decorative pewter "coin" on the compass' back by skilled artisans from Mullingar, the center of Ireland's pewter industry, drawing upon a rich history of craftsmanship that dates back 800 years. A plated tin/copper alloy case protects the compass, which uses a floating needle to indicate north, a rose to indicate NE, SE, SW, and NW as well as 90º, 180º, and 270º, and a bezel to indicate headings from 30-330º in 30º increments; an orienting line rotates in a disc inside the bezel. A canvas strap attaches to the crown using a lobster-claw clasp. Presented in a velour-lined box. 2" Diameter x 1/2" D. (3 1/2 oz.)
