Product Story

This is the folding equatorial sundial inspired by a design attributed to goldsmith Johann Georg Vogler in 1760. Used by 18th century European explorers, the original was made in Augsburg, Germany, which imparts the name given to this type of instrument and similar iterations found in the History of Science Museum at Oxford University and the Naval Museum in Madrid. Made from brass-plated metal with a lacquered wooden base, this model reproduces the compass dial behind glass, hinged quadrant for latitude, and hinged equinoctial hour ring with gnomon—the latter of which casts a uniform shadow on the hour ring when aligned with the axis of the Earth. Unfolded 4" H x 4" sq.
