Artisans working near Donegal process the fleeces shorn from locally raised sheep into fine, cream-colored yarn that, when spun, retains its natural oils, resulting in a water-resistant fabric that insulates the wearer against cold, blustery weather. Originating among the fisherfolk of Ireland's west coast, the Aran honeycomb and basket stitch patterns evoke images of the hardworking bee and the fisherman who wishes for a bountiful catch.
