Product Story

Available only from Hammacher Schlemmer, this is the genuine Moroccan hand-dyed indigo scarf worn by nomadic Saharan Berbers. Woven in Marrakesh from viscose, the traditional scarf or tagelmust wraps around the head and neck to provide multiple layers of protection against harsh desert elements including prolonged sun exposure, intense heat, and wind-borne sand. Worn for centuries by the Tuaregs—a nomadic faction of the Berbers—the indigo-dyed fabric earned them the moniker “The Blue People” and helped the Tuaregs establish a culture and society separate from other Berber groups. The scarf’s iconic hue has maintained importance in Middle Eastern culture as a symbol of prestige and affluence and a time-honored color worn on special occasions. Dry clean. 86 1/2" L x 39 1/2" W.
