Named one of Time Magazine's Inventions of the Year, this is the only portable handheld water-purification device that uses ultraviolet light to purify 16 oz. of clear water per use in a mere 48 seconds, or 32 oz. of water per use in 90 seconds. The ultraviolet light destroys microbes such as giardia and cryptosporidium, eliminates 99.99% of viruses such as hepatitis and poliovirus, and kills 99.9999% of bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. The size of an electric toothbrush, the lightweight device easily fits into a frame pack or daypack, a suitcase or purse, a glove compartment, or an emergency kit for quick retrieval and use without the extensive preparation or set-up common to many purification methods. The unit meets strict United States Environmental Protection Agency protocols for microbiological water purifiers, and its slim shape allows the purifying wand to be placed directly into a water container such as a glass, water bottle, or canteen. Four AA batteries (not included) provide enough power to treat up to 150 16 oz. containers of water before requiring a battery change, and there are no chemicals that can change the taste of water or that require an extensive waiting period before consumption.
