Unlike most DVD players that play back only pre-recorded material, this unit is so advanced it can transfer a personal collection of home videos from standard videotape to a more permanent Digital Video Disc (DVD). Besides being more compact (requiring only about 33% of the space of standard VHS cassettes) DVDs are a more durable and stable media than analog tape or film. This recorder¿s advanced compression technology can actually produce DVDs with a sharper, clearer picture and more distinct sound than the original. With a quality heretofore found only in professional digital recording studios, it can also record and play DVDs from broadcast and cable sources, and it can play standard, pre-recorded DVDs and audio CDs. Its ¿timeslip¿ feature, allows the freedom to simultaneously record a television event in ¿real time¿ while watching what has been previously recorded. The device records quickly onto high-capacity DVD-RAM discs (sold separately below) that can can be rewritten approximately 100,000 times. It can also record onto standard DVD-R format, which is a disc that can be recorded once and plays in standard DVD players. The digital format allows rapid location of data on a disc, so it can be accessed quickly and easily without having to fast-forward through a whole tape.
