The Royal Observatory Greenwich Clock

This is the faithful replica of the clock that hangs outside the gate of the Royal Observatory in England, the first to display Greenwich Mean Time in public. Also known as the Shepherd’s Gate Clock, the original was invented in 1852 by engineer Charles Shepherd Jr. That timepiece used a patented galvanic system to synchronize with clocks around the observatory grounds and throughout the British Empire, paving the way for standardized global timekeeping. Updated with an accurate quartz movement, this officially licensed half-scale replica includes a chapter ring with roman numerals indicating a full 24 hours, such that the aluminum hands only rotate around the dial once a day. Arabic numerals demarcate the surrounding minute track in five-minute increments, and a large subdial counts the seconds. The tail of the minute hand is painted white to blend in with the background and facilitate reading the time from a distance. Metal case. For indoor use only.
