Product Story

Inspired by furniture designer and architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, this is a replica of the bench found in the gardens of Britain’s Sissinghurst Castle. The lavish gardens—among the most famous in England—were planted in the 1930s according to a whimsical style espoused by horticulturalist Gertrude Jekyll, Lutyens’ long-time mentor and collaborator. The Sissinghurst Bench reflects the melding of their trademark styles: Lutyens’ use of Arts and Crafts detailing with Jekyll’s love for the natural and surprising. The comfortable bench has long, simple lines in its slatted back and arms, with elaborate scrollwork on its back and arms. It is built from weather-resistant teak, a tropical wood Lutyens likely encountered while designing the Viceroy’s House in India and that is prized for its natural oils and dense grains, which protect against rot, insects, and the elements. The elegant bench will age to a soft gray or can be regularly treated to maintain its original color. Assembly required. 54" L x 38 1/2" H x 21 1/2" D. (48 lbs.)
