Product Story

From the Smithsonian Institution, this assemble-your-own kit gives children the tools they need to measure the force and effects of the weather right outside their doors. Children can learn how weather works, as well as how to build critical thinking and problem solving skills. The kit includes a rain gauge, weather vane, indoor and outdoor thermometers, and an anemometer for measuring wind speed. The included weather tower holds the weather vane, rain gauge and anemometer in a case that can sit on a table or install on a fence. The case has a storage area for a data sheet, pencil and cloud chart to record measurements. The comprehensive instructional manual details how children can make their own barometers and hygrometers to measure air pressure and humidity, and it includes thorough information on everything from measuring wind speed on a Beaufort scale to calculating wind chill. Ages 8 and up. 12 1/2" H x 16" W x 4" D. (1 1/2 lbs.)
