The Tested Best Bird Feeder

This double-sided bird feeder was designated Best by the Institute after it scored top marks for bird appeal, squirrel resistance, durability of construction, quality of design, quality of instructions and cleaning. Its horizontal steel perch was preferred by birds over tube-style feeding stations: feeders were videotaped (32 hours over six days) and the number of birds that approached or landed was tallied. To deter squirrels, the perch is spring-loaded. The weight of a squirrel will make the perch drop and automatically shut off access to the food. This spring-loaded perch can also be adjusted from a light to heavy tension to include or exclude certain bird species from landing by weight (a list of common birds and the appropriate tension adjustments are included). The large capacity, top-loading hopper holds two gallons of seed. Seven small viewing windows just under the roof allow you to quickly see when refilling is needed. Seed-saver baffles (removable for cleaning) serve as individual feeding "bowls" and prevent spillage. The "V" bottom promotes even feed flow and multiple drain holes keep feeder dry. Made of rust-resistant galvanized steel, baked on enamel finish. Comes with a heavy-duty steel hanger; for ground placement, a 64-inch pole with a ground socket is included.
