Product Story

This is the authentic wool tweed hunting hat originally worn by the English gentry in the 1800s. Known as the deerstalker hat, it was popularized in 1887, when Sir Walter Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes was described wearing it in Study in Scarlet. Also called a fore-and-after (for the brim on the front and back of the hat), the deerstalker has a grosgrain ribbon to tie ear flaps to the top of the hat. Made in Stockport, Cheshire by Christy Headwear (founded by Miller Christy and recipient of the royal crest since 1773), the deerstalker hat is handcrafted from 100% wool tweed using traditional methods of shaping and blocking. Dry clean. Hat sizes 6-7/8", 7", 7-1/8", 7-1/4", 7-3/8", 7-1/2".
